Sales ledger, 1855-1858.

Record of sales at the "Fancy Store House in the Hall." Prisoners did not purchase items here and it is unclear whether the items sold were made within the prison. Entries consist of date, article sold, purchaser, and amount. Items sold include toothpicks, pin cushions, knives, forks, whistles, bodkins, and crochet needles. Buyers indicated by name, nationality, or as "stranger." Bound with the Employee Bond Record series [MSA S0261].

The Maryland Penitentiary was the first prison established by the state and the second of its kind within the United States. The maximum security facility was authorized by the Laws of 1804, res. 15, and opened in 1811. An 1881 penitentiary publication reports that prior to its establishment, criminals were housed in county jails or workhouses and "made to labor upon the public roads."
